Staying Fungi-Free During the Rainy Months

Rainy season brings cooler temperatures and much-needed relief from the heat—but it also creates the perfect environment for fungal infections to thrive. The combination of humidity, damp clothing, and wet footwear can trap moisture against the skin, allowing fungi to grow rapidly, especially in warm, dark areas like the feet, groin, and underarms.

Here is how you can protect yourself from fungal skin infections:

• Make sure to dry off completely after bathing, paying special attention to areas like between your toes and skin folds where moisture can get trapped.

• Avoid walking barefoot in public areas such as locker rooms, communal showers, and swimming pools, where fungi can easily spread.

• Choose loose-fitting, breathable clothing made from cotton or similar materials to help keep your skin dry and cool.

• Do not share personal items like towels, hats, hairbrushes, or combs, as they can spread fungal infections.

• If you are prone to athlete’s foot, alternate your footwear every few days to allow shoes to dry out completely. Opt for sandals or open shoes in warmer weather.

• If someone in your home has scalp ringworm, be sure to clean or dispose of items they have used—like bedding, hats, and combs—to stop the infection from spreading.

• Bring your pet to a vet if you suspect ringworm to prevent passing the infection to others in your household.
